The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers
What you see in the film: Gandalf dies, Frodo cries, Gimli bitches about evil elven sorceresses, blah blah blah. But you'll notice that Aragorn has them hauling ass into the forest like it's going out of style. He says that the place'll be crawling with orcs by nightfall. However, as it is still broad daylight, this explanation is not entirely satisfying. Anyhoo, bitch bitch bitch, and here's Haldir and his posse to break it up.  (1., 3-4. Decipher: "Loth-lorien Woods," "The Seen and the Un-seen," "You Bring Great Evil"; 2. DVD cap, IGN/Fantasy Planet.)

However, we all know that something else was filmed, because it was in the trailer(s). But as you'll see below, the following sequence doesn't mesh easily with the theatrical cut--is it an entirely alternate version, cut for time?

1. Fantasy Planet. This could be orcs roaming towards Amon Hen as the Fel-lowship's on the river. But it looks a lot like the images below...

2. Decipher: "Curse Their Foul Feet." The card text specifically recalls a scene in the books where orcs did pursue the 'Ship into the woods.

3. Fantasy Planet. Picking up the pace.

4-6. Decipher: "Malice," "Goblin Warrior," "Goblin Spear." Notice the similarity of these critters to Decipher's "Relentless" Moria card (at right). But--wasn't the point of Saruman making Uruk-Hai that now he had Orcs who could now go out into the daylight? Yeah, we don't know, either.

7. Decipher: "Goblin Backstabber." (Do what?) Notice how this one's almost the second half of #6. Also note the lovely Venus-flytrap he's sporting here: definitely from the Moria Collection (top right). By contrast, the Uruk-Hai at Amon Hen have different headgear (below right).

8. TORN: Behind the scenes footage from the internet-only preview.

9. TORN: Also from the internet-only preview, which is an interesting connection in itself. Hauling ass makes a lot more sense now, doesn't it?
Dimrill Dale and Escape from Moria: Okay. We all know there's some sort of action sequence in the woods, because we all saw it in the trailer. But where did it go? Our January layout returns with additional pictures--and a look at the footage that may have preceded it.  The thumbnails are a shorthand guide to other sites' full-size images, and we are indebted to these original sources. Decipher, Fantasy Planet, and Numenoreen in particular have extensive galleries with hundreds of images, and we encourage you to visit their sites. Additionally, in the case of Decipher cards, we cannot guarantee these precise shots will appear on the DVD--only that they exist. Please use our Contact email form for questions or comments. Tomorrow: Confirmed shots from the Shire, and some mysterious pictures of Arwen and the hobbits in Rivendell.

10. The next three, all from TORN trailer caps, are larger because, quite frankly, you can't see anything otherwise. Here we have the well-known trailer shot of Legolas whipping out his bow, with Boromir to the right and Frodo and Sam to the lower left.

11. Notice the arrow flying past Aragorn's face, as pointed out in the TORN trailer analysis...

12. ...and then over Merry's head as he ducks. You can see the orcs in pursuit there in the background, bring us back to pictures 1-3.

The question that TORN posed was--if Legolas is shooting at them, why did an arrow come from
behind the Fellowship?

Full size at Decipher.com.
13. Fantasy Planet: Behind-the-scenes shot of Orlando Bloom, standing on a box to preserve the height difference, as the hobbit actors (or their "little person" doubles; the picture is too blurry to be certain) sprint past.

14. Fantasy Planet: Behind the Scenes 2, Electric Boogaloo.

15-16. Question on #12 answered: Haldir and Company intervene. Question is--do they take care of the orcs and
then con-tinue following the Fellowship? But that's weird, because the arrow came from in front of the Fellowship's path and they'd have to pass the elves and... our heads hurt. (Decipher's "Border Defenses"; Numenoreen.) Added: Another view.

17. Fantasy Planet. It's Haldir. In the woods. Heads? Still hurt.

18. Numenoreen: Toss-up on this one--it's either Haldir and Posse as they first meet the Fellowship, or it's from that
truncated scene where Galadriel and the elves all see the group off. (See "Galadriel's gifts.")

19. Numenoreen: Overhead shot, the Fel-lowship to the left and Haldir to the right. An alternate angle may have appeared in the film when Aragorn is talking to Haldir.

20. We
can identify this: Haldir is reaching out to Frodo (extreme lower left) as they enter Lorien and/or Caras Galadhon. (Boromir's to the lower right; Aragorn immediately behind Haldir, Legolas ahead of Aragorn. Oh, just click on the damn thumbnail already!)

21. New: See an FOTR DVD screencap at TheOneRing.net: the Fellowship's first glimpse of Caras Galadhon.

22. New: See an FOTR DVD screencap at
TheOneRing.net: the Fellowship ascends into Caras Galadhon.

Here's the trick: In the book, they spend the night in a sort of elven treehouse before continuing on to
Caras Galadhon (which you may remember from the film as "those big bright shiny treehouses where Galadriel lives"). So exactly how much of this was filmed? More to the point--how much will end up on the DVD? Only November can tell.

Tomorrow: Confirmed scenes from the Shire, including Frodo and Sam watching "the stately exodus of the Elves"; mysterious shots of Arwen and the hobbits in Rivendell.

1. Fantasy Planet. This shot may be in the theatrical cut--if so, it's when Aragorn is trying to rouse the group out of their grief to get the hell away from Moria.

2. Decipher: "A Golden Light on the Land." Text: "The orcs will not....come out until dusk, but we must be far away before nightfall." Similar to Aragorn's line in the film.

3. Decipher: "Dimrill Dale."

4. Fantasy Planet. The Fellowship, near the bottom,  is more readily visible in the full-size version.

5. Fantasy Planet. The actors and crew discussing the scene.

6. Fantasy Planet: Different picture, same scene.

7-9. Fantasy Planet. We don't quite know what's going on here, but it seems to be some kind of pause, perhaps a disagree-ment of some sort. The hobbits do not seem happy.

10. Decipher: "Gimli's Battle Axe."

11-12. Fantasy Planet. There seem to be more than a few Gimli pictures floating around for Dimrill Dale; is the disagree-ment over proceeding to Lorien?

There's a good reason why this may have been cut from the theatrical version: If this is just a reiteration of the "We don't want to go to Lorien"/ "Well, tough, because we're burning daylight" argument, that's ably cover-ed in the brief scene that survived. For a look at that scene--and what may be an alternate action sequence--keep going.
