The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers
1. Numenoreen. This looks like the "What about second breakfast?" scene that was actually in the film, which essentially skips to Weathertop afterwards. Here's the scene we have been told will be restored to the November DVD:

2. Possibly just an alternate take of "second breakfast"; Peter Jackson was known to go with whatever weather conditions he was handed on location.

3. Though this has been billed as a "deleted shot," it probably comes either directly before or after "second breakfast."

4. Decipher: "Midgewater Moors." An overhead shot of the location.

5. Decipher: "Midgewater Marshes." The hobbits slogging through the muck, Bill the Pony in tow. (Readers have asked if any more Bill the Pony scenes will be included--such as, you know, how they got him. We have no idea.)

6. Numenoreen. More slogging.

7. Pippin in a sinkhole. Where's Aragorn through all this?

8. Numenoreen. We vaguely remember from the book that Strider, whom the hobbits still do not trust, wanders off a bit in the night, making them even more suspicious. This still, originally from the official site, is captioned, "Strider Approaches the Sleeping Hobbits."

9. Look, there's one now. Before the movie came out, we thought this might be Frodo after his Weathertop wound. Obviously, it's not--apparently the Sleeping Hobbits wake easily. (Fantasy Planet, from the Fox "Quest for the Ring" special.)

We have no idea what's going on in any of the following pictures, just that they all seem to take place in a similar location, and since Gandalf is there, that location is probably Hollin (or, as you may remember it from the movie, "All that walking around before they got to the big dark mine"). Long story short: Don't quote us on any of this.

10. Decipher: "Hollin." Not ones to waste words, the Decipher folks. Notice the general scrubby-mountainous grassland look we have going here, though.

11-13. Fantasy Planet. Okay, we actually have a theory about this. Ian McKellen mentioned something in an interview about something in the script--something about Gandalf grumbling about how he had been put on (Middle) Earth as an old man. Immortal, but old. Legolas, however, seems to have gotten a much better deal. Is this what they're talking about here?

14. Numenoreen. Notice how Legolas seems to be supporting Gandalf.

15. Numenoreen. Generic shot of Gandalf. Note the scrubby grass we've got going on again.

16-18. Numenoreen. This shot could go along with the hobbits on the moors (see top of page), or with the Fellowship in Hollin. We don't know. (Readers suggested this was from The Two Towers. However--no elven cloak. This is definitely before Lorien. Also, Cleolinda feels the sudden, pressing urge to get a life.)

17. Viggo Mortensen looking at footage with producer Barrie Osbourne.

18. Viggo Mortensen: Still pretty. What we're saying is... yeah, we got nothin'.

Coming tomorrow: This time, we've got something. Our original layout of the "Moria escape" returns, and a sequence of shots from what looks like a Dimrill Dale pitstop between Moria and Lorien.
Midgewater Marshes and Hollin: Scenes confirmed by Lights Out Entertainment and Numenoreen to be on the November "extended cut" DVD. The thumbnails are a shorthand guide to other sites' full-size images, and we are indebted to these original sources. Decipher, Fantasy Planet, and Numenoreen in particular have extensive galleries with hundreds of images, and we encourage you to visit their sites. Additionally, in the case of Decipher cards, we cannot guarantee these precise shots will appear on the DVD--only that they exist. Please use our Contact email form for questions or comments. Tomorrow: Escape from Moria and Dimrill Dale.
