5/9/03: A few long overdue pictures. Top row: various cast members in real life with Troy hair (hold cursor over thumbnails for details); bottom row: set pics from Times of Malta. 4/11/03: Ah, we have a Helen: German Diane ("dee-AHN") Kruger. Interest- ingly, none of the pictures our friends at Fametracker have dug up look any- thing like this one--they're all much blonder. (Coming Soon) 4/1/03: Okay, we ran around for about 24 hours doing the "Yes she is!"/ "No she isn't!" thing, but we seem to have established now that Sienna Guillory (The Time Machine) will not play this film's Helen of Troy. She appears to be starring, instead, in the USA network's miniseries "Helen of Troy." Even though the Fametracker folk found an article that specifically said that Guillory was in the Orlando Bloom Troy; apparently the article is just wrong. 3/6/03: New additions: Tons. Confirmations of Sean Bean (Odysseus), Brendan Gleeson (Menelaus), Brian Cox (Agammemnon), Julie Christie (Thetis), Saffron Burrows (Andromache, Hector's wife), Garrett Hedlund (Patroclus), and... no Helen. We'll be updating the character descriptions shortly. For now, we're all about the cast. Here's what we know (background info from Encyclopedia Mythica): >> Achilles: "Achilles was the son of the mortal Peleus and the Nereid Thetis. He was the mightiest of the Greeks who fought in the Trojan War, and was the hero of Homer's Iliad." Played by: Brad Pitt, who was seen sporting quite a leonine head of hair at the Globes; his comments on the red carpet indicated that it may, in fact, have been for this movie. >> Paris: Prince of Troy, son of Priam. Asked to judge the beauty pageant of the gods (you think I'm kidding), he chooses Aphrodite, who has offered him Helen in exchange. Played by: Orlando Bloom (Legolas in LOTR, Black Hawk Down, upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean). >> Hector: Prince of Troy, brother of Paris. "Hector was the mightiest warrior on the side of Troy during the Trojan War, and he led many of the attacks against the Greek troops." Severe spoilers in the Mythica article, for those of you not up on your Greek myths. Played by: Eric Bana (The Hulk, Black Hawk Down). >> Priam: King of Troy, father of Hector and Paris. What we do know is that Peter O'Toole has been cast as... someone. The word on the street, if you will, is that he'd play this character. >> Helen: "The face that launched a thousand ships": wife of Menelaus, daughter of Leda and Zeus (you know, the "Leda and the swan" story?); ran off with (or was abducted by?) Paris. Played by: Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black--a Brad Pitt film. Interesting). Update: Petersen has now said that Helen is still uncast, and that he IS going for an unknown. >> Odysseus: Ruler of Ithaca, mentor to Achilles. "He was known for his cleverness and cunning, and for his eloquence as a speaker." Played by: Sean Bean (Fellowship of the Ring), now confirmed. >> Briseis: "A Trojan slave girl who is the cousin of Hector [Bana] and Paris [Bloom]. Briseis is given to Achilles [Pitt], who then develops a fondness for her. When she is captured by the enemy, his rage is unleashed" (IGN). Well, actually, in mythology he's much more concerned with his friend Patroclus, but okay... Played by: Rose Byrne (Padmé's handmaid Dormé in Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones). >> Patroclus: Newcomer Garrett Hedlund has nabbed this one on his first audition EVER. Reportedly the movie is shifting this character from "Achilles' lover" to "Achilles' cousin." More (tentative): Michael Clarke Duncan (Ajax?) and Emilio Estevez (what?) are also said to be in consideration and/or negotiations. Got any more sites we should add? Let us know. |
