Casting calls and future films

Release dates

Blade: Trinity: delayed to December (Empire Movies)

Envy: moved from April 2 to April 30 (Jo Blo)

Quick casting

Assault on Precinct 13 remake:
Gabriel Byrne, Brian Dennehy (Empire Online)

Casanova: Heath Ledger, dir. Lasse Hallstrom (Jo Blo)

Edison: Dylan McDermott, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Justin Timberlake, LL Cool J, Piper Perabo (Empire Movies)

Jack Nicholson biopic:
Okay, actually casting Christian Slater just makes this sound like a joke straight from the ‘80s, so I have a really hard time believing it. (Dark Horizons)

The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe: Christopher Anderson-Peters for Peter? Also, this may have gotten lost in the pileup of news, but Nicole Kidman apparently isn’t playing the White Witch, although IGN Filmforce has a source who says she really is signed up, and doesn’t know why Walden Media won’t confirm that. (Dark Horizons)

Manchester United Ruined My Life: Alan Rickman, Derek Jacobi, Jason Isaacs. “Manchester United” is a soccer team, for those Americans out there wondering. (Empire Online)

Meet the Fockers: Barbra Streisand’s been confirmed to play Ben Stiller’s mother. (Killer Movies)

Miss Congeniality 2: Regina King, as Sandra Bullock’s new FBI partner (Cinescape)

Nanny McPhee: Kelly McDonald will play a housemaid to Emma Thompson’s nanny. Last major role: a… housemaid, in Gosford Park (Sci-Fi Wire)

Scooby Doo 3: Are Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar leaving? Is our God a merciful God? Stay tuned. (Moviehole)

The Sisters: No idea why they won’t call it “Three Sisters,” since it’s based on the Chekhov, but all right. Cast includes Laura Dern, Maria Bello, Erika Christensen, Eric McCormack, Chris O'Donnell, Elizabeth Banks, Linus Roache (Coming Soon)

Tomb Raider 3:
Angelina Jolie: “I never want to play Lara Croft again.” That’s a no, then…? (IGN)

Vinyl: Another huge cast, this time “a group of women behind a male rock band”: Shane West, Lukas Haas, Dominique Swain, Thora Birch, Jena Malone, Marla Sokoloff, Anna Faris (Coming Soon)

Screenwriters

G.I. Joe:
Michael Gordon talks to IGN about the script.

More films

Batman Begins:
Well, looks like they’ve roped Christian Bale in for sequels. (Moviehole)

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:
Moviehole has a report from a casting call.

Chris Tucker movies: He’s signed on to do Money Talks 2 and Rush Hour 3. See? Got those out of the way in a single item. Nice and painless. (Killer Movies)

Earthsea:
Isabella Rossellini will play High Priestess Thar in the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries. (Cinescape)

Gothika: A sequel? A TV series? Did you people not check the box office receipts? (Killer Movies)

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban:
IGN has the latest roundup of film news.

I Am Legend:
Matthew Kassovitz says he wants to make the movie—it sounds like he’s officially signed, as he talks about “casting that one shortly.” It does seem like the Governator is no longer involved. (Killer Movies)

Nine Wives: Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) will direct this tale of “a commitment-phobic guy who breaks up with his longtime girlfriend and begins to wake up every morning with a different wife.” (Coming Soon)

Pet Sematary: Really, do we need another one? The original was about as good as the book deserved. Anyway, Paramount wants George Clooney. I want a million dollars; what’s your point? (Dark Horizons)

The Ring 2:
Noam Murro has dropped out due to “creative differences,” which is usually code for something more interesting, but I don’t know what. Naomi Watts and David Dorfman are already signed on to return and Ehren Kruger wrote this one as well, and the release date is holding at November 10. (SciFi Wire)

The Return of Superfly:
Denzel Washington will reteam with Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) for this Frank Lucas biopic. Adds Empire Movies, “Lucas grew up in rural, segregated North Carolina. In the early 1970s, he became the biggest heroin dealer in Harlem with a smuggling scheme that imported the stuff out of Southeast Asia in the caskets of Vietnam soldiers. The script, penned by Steven Zaillian, centers on narcotics lawman Richie Roberts' struggle to bring down Lucas, whose flamboyant style earned him the street name ‘Superfly.’ Lucas goes on to help Roberts hunt down dirty cops and overseas connections.”

Seed of Chucky: The movie, which has wasted away in development hell for a few years now, had suddenly gotten the greenlight and is filming in… Romania. No, I don’t know why, either. John Waters and Redman have joined the cast as well. Also: Billy Boyd-voiced Spawn of Chuck will be named “Glen.” No word on how they’ll explain the Scottish accent (the milkman, maybe?). (Moviehole)

Serenity: Characters new and old have been leaked to Cinescape.

Star Wars: Episode III:
Lucas says it’s “hell and brimstone time” as the first 100 FX shots are completed and he and the editor begin to cut “extraneous material.” (SciFi Wire)

Strangers with Candy:
Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker will costar. More importantly, I ? Stephen Colbert. (Jo Blo)

Wheel of Time:
You know, trying to condense ten volumes into movie(s) sounds like a recipe for disgruntled fans. (Cinescape)

Parting shot

IMDB: "Presley 'Saw Things I Couldn't Do Anything About' at Jackson Home"

** Singer Lisa Marie Presley saw "things I couldn't do anything about" during her 20-month marriage to Michael Jackson. Presley reveals she had concerns about troubled singer Jackson's lifestyle in an interview with Australian TV interviewer Andrew Denton on his Enough Rope talk show, to be broadcast on the Australian Broadcasting Corp. channel Monday. Presley, daughter of late music legend Elvis Presley, and Jackson shocked the world when they tied the knot in the Dominican Republic in May 1994. Presley went on to file for divorce in January 1996, citing "irreconcilable differences". In the interview to promote her singing career in Australia, Presley says she felt "powerless in a lot of ways, in terms of realizing that I was part of a machine, and seeing things going on that I couldn't do anything about. And don't ask me what sort of things, because I'm not going to answer. But just stuff." When asked by Denton if it was difficult to be in a marriage where she felt powerless, Presley replies, "It was, that's why I left." Referring to how she feels about Jackson now, Presley explains, "It's really bizarre, I feel nothing." Presley's second husband Jackson is currently awaiting trial in California to fight charges of performing lewd or lascivious acts on a child under 14 and administering an intoxicating agent. **
